HEALTH CONDITIONS WE SUPPORT

Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) Support

Your missing period is your body’s way of communicating with you.

Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) is a condition where menstrual periods stop because the brain temporarily reduces the hormones needed to stimulate ovulation. This commonly occurs when the body perceives that it doesn’t have enough energy or resources to support reproduction.

HA is often associated with a combination of low energy availability, excessive exercise, psychological stress or significant weight loss, but it can also occur in women who appear to be a healthy weight. It is not simply about body weight—it’s about whether your body feels safe enough to support normal hormone production.

At Pure Health Nutrition, our Clinical Nutritionists and Naturopaths work alongside your GP and healthcare team to understand why your cycle has stopped and develop a personalised, evidence-based plan to help restore hormonal health and support your body’s recovery.

What We Look Into

Missing periods are a symptom—not the diagnosis itself. Before diagnosing HA, it’s important to rule out other causes of absent periods, including pregnancy, thyroid conditions, PCOS and other hormonal disorders.

Depending on your health history, we may investigate factors including:

  • Low energy availability
  • Nutritional intake
  • Exercise and training load
  • Stress and nervous system health
  • Thyroid function
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Gut health
  • Sleep and recovery
  • Bone health risk factors

Depending on your health history, your practitioner may recommend:

To gain a deeper understanding of your hormone patterns, including cortisol, progesterone, oestrogen metabolism and other hormone metabolites that may be influencing your cycle.

To assess thyroid function, reproductive hormones, iron stores, vitamin D, B12, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies and other markers that may be contributing to menstrual dysfunction.

To evaluate digestive function, inflammation and the gut microbiome. Supporting gut health can play an important role in nutrient absorption, immune function and overall hormonal health.

To assess nutrient status, energy production, metabolic function and nutritional needs, helping us identify factors that may be impacting recovery and hormone production.

Including your menstrual history, nutrition, relationship with food, exercise habits, stress, sleep, previous pathology and medical history to build a complete understanding of your health.

Our Approach

Recovery from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea requires an individualised approach. Rather than simply focusing on getting your period back, we aim to create the conditions your body needs to feel safe enough to restore normal hormone production.

Every treatment plan is personalised and may include:

  • Nutrition to improve energy availability
  • Optimising macronutrient and micronutrient intake
  • Supporting healthy hormone production
  • Gut health and digestive support
  • Personalised supplementation where appropriate
  • Stress and nervous system support
  • Guidance around movement and recovery
  • Ongoing monitoring and adjustments throughout your recovery

Where appropriate, we also work alongside your GP or endocrinologist to ensure you receive comprehensive care.

Our goal is to help restore a healthy menstrual cycle while supporting your long-term hormone health, fertility, bone health and overall wellbeing.
